PregnancyDuring pregnancy muscles and ligaments soften and stretch due to an increase in the ovarian hormone relaxin, which makes your feet more prone to ankle and ligament strains.
Added to this, pregnancy places extra pressure on your joints especially in the back , leg and feet. Wearing high heels alters your posture, shortens your calf muscles and places increasing pressure on your back and knees.
Paying particular attention to your feet and the footwear is important as pregnancy can cause feet to swell increasing shoe size by one size during and after pregnancy.
Other common pregnancy related foot and leg complaints include:
- Swollen legs and feet - caused by uterus putting pressure on the veins within the pelvis. This in turn slows down the rate of return of blood through the veins back to the heart. This causes the feet to swell and you may get throbbing.
- Arch and heel pain – is caused by the softening of the muscles and ligaments in addition to the increased body weight
- Varicose veins - caused by uterus putting pressure on the veins within the pelvis. This in turn slows down the rate of return of blood through the veins back to the heart. Bllod pools in the veins and where the walls of the vessels have relaxed due to increased levels of Relaxin, the veins can distend and bulge
